[b]MIRI, Feb 5 /b – Wehaya Sdn Bhd, a Miri-based Bumiputera company, has become the first company in Malaysia to be certified by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) under its new IECEx scheme for electrical equipment for explosive atmospheres.
Wehaya said in a statement today that the award was received by managing director Narawi Sedi at the IECEx 2008 Industry Symposium on “Electrical Equipment in Explosive Atmosphere” at the Brunei Asia-Pacific Learning Hub in Seria recently.
This certification is an international scheme covering the assessment and on-site audit of organisations that provide repair & overhaul services to the explosives-related industry.
The objective of the IECEx Scheme is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in explosive atmospheres while maintaining the required level of safety.
Narawi said while Wehaya is proud to be the first Malaysian company to earn the certification, what is even more significant is that Wehaya is only the second company in the world to get it, after MARC Thailand Co Ltd.
Founded in 1990, Wehaya is a Petronas-licensed service contractor since 1996 specialising in mechanical, electrical and instrumentation installation to full system services.
It had also received the International Standard Organisation (ISO) 9001:2000 certification in 1999 for electrical, instrumentation and metering services for the oil & gas industry.
Its expertise had led to its involvement in more than 100 projects in Malaysia, East Nigeria and China.
Besides the headquarters here, Wehaya also has offices in Bintulu (Sarawak), Labuan, Kota Kinabalu (Sabah), Kuala Belait (Brunei Darussalam), Shah Alam (Selangor) and Kemaman (Terengganu).
