MARUDI: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) recently held a two-day course on Karas Cultivation, Management and Inoculation Techniques for Agarwood Production.

Course participants were from villages in Upper Baram, Mulu, Bakong, Lapok, Niah and Miri.

Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said this was the third series of the course, which began last year.

He said it has so far benefited some 100 families.

Due to the overwhelming response and requests from other potential participants, Dennis said a similar course may be held in Miri next March or April.

The main objective of the course is to share and expose participants on the importance of Aquilaria or karas cultivation, as well as present state-of-the-art inducement techniques for agarwood production.

Those requiring further information can contact FRIM Biotechnology Division Forest Plantation Management Branch head and agarwood expert Dr Lok Eng Hai on 019-8057073 or Tinnes Malai on 016-9721313.
