Turning Labuan into a top draw

LABUAN: A fully developed Federal Territory. That is Labuan in 2015, according to a master plan to propel the island as an offshore financial centre, gas industry and petroleum hub, shipping hub, regional education centre and a world-class tourism centre.

The Federal Territories Ministry and the Labuan Corporation are working out this master plan to develop the duty-free island’s various economic sectors, including banking, industry and human resource development.

Other amenities to be developed to attract visitors to Labuan include an 18-hole golf course, said minister Datuk Zulhasnan Rafique of the 2015 Labuan Master Plan.

He is here to accompany the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Tuanku Syed Putra Jamalullail on a three-day visit.

Zulhasnan said his ministry would promote the natural beauty of Layang-Layang Island, towards making Labuan a world-class destination.

Layang-Layang boasts a 7km long and 2km wide reef that is considered a Divers Haven.

Zulhasnan said the island is surrounded by crystal clear waters and is rich in marine life, including the hammerhead shark, the manta ray (with fins extending up to three metres), baraccudas and reef sharks.

On the eastern side of the island, thousands of migratory birds stop over.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Layang-Layang Island is listed as the 10th most beautiful diving location in the world, said Zulhasnan. Bernama
