BINTULU: The inaugural cycling event – Tour of Sarawak 2016, is scheduled to be held from 16 to 20 March next year.
To be conducted in five stages, 120 local and foreign riders are expected to participate in the event which will start in Miri and end in Kuching.

According to the event director Mohd Fazlie from Fadz Industries Sdn Bhd, the idea of the tour came from international programme like Le Tour De Langkawi that is held annually.
“Applying the same concept into the upcoming Tour of Sarawak 2016, it could be a platform to introduce the cultural uniqueness and beauty of Sarawak to the world,” he said.
It will also be a chance to unearth cycling talents from the event, he added.
“At the moment, we received 65 entries from international and national cyclists. However, we have to do the screening and finalize the participants to ensure that their status and performance meet with the regulation of international cycling event,” he disclosed at a preparation meeting for Bintulu Division in Wisma Resident here yesterday.
Tour of Sarawak 2016 is a bike cycling event sanctioned by the world governing body Union Cycliste Internationale as a 2.2 Category Race and a part of the UCI Asia Tour Calendar.
Meanwhile, Bintulu Resident Muhammad Yakup Kari guaranteed that the event would receive full support from the government departments here to ensure its success.
“Tour of Sarawak 2016 is fully supported by the state government with endorsements from the Chief Minister’s Office, Ministry of Social Development and Malaysian Sports Ministry,” he pointed out.
A similar meeting was also held in Miri Resident’s Office in Miri yesterday. Among the attendents were Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis and Mohd Fazlie.
