MIRI: Community services from politicians are still much appreciated by the people even though they might have lost their seats in GE14.
One of them who have continued with their services on the ground is Sarawak United Peoples Party (SUPP) secretary-general Datuk Sebastian Ting although he did not win the Miri parliamentary constituency in the elections.
Kampung Pujut resident Drahman Latep told Metro Sabah and Sarawak that Ting was still respected and needed in Miri, as politicians who were sincere and hardworking would always be appreciated.
“Down to earth, hardworking and productive - these traits are what we look for in a wakil rakyat (people’s representatives).
“SUPP and Ting lost due to national issues. His defeat did not mean he was a bad politician.
“We still need him and we still respect him for the many good deeds he had done for us kampung folk,” he said at his Raya open house.
Drahman said Ting was still Piasau assemblyman, who had been very hardworking despite losing in GE14.
Miri Kampung Dagang resident Minah Bujang said Ting had not stopped serving the people.
She said an MP or assemblyman must be hardworking, on the ground with the constituents and be able to solve issues affecting the people.
“There must be sincere efforts,” she said.
Miri Indian Association chairman Karambir Singh said Ting had proven his sincerity to serve.
“He has helped to solve many cases of squatters’ land woes as well as late registrations of birth certificate,” he said.
Ting lost to incumbent Teo Yu Keng from PKR in Miri by about 13,000 votes.
