Three Terengganu teachers found involved in drug abuse this year

KUALA TERENGGANU: Urine tests conducted by the Terengganu Education Department detected three teachers involved in drug abuse this year, said director Shafruddin Ali Hussin.

He said one of them was dismissed and action was being taken against the two others.

“The department will continue to conduct urine tests on teachers, who had disciplinary problems, on the recommendation of headmasters or principals,” he said, adding that the district education offices and schools conducted urine tests on their own initiative.

The percentage of teachers involved in drug abuse was small when compared to the over 23,000 teachers in the state, he said when asked to comment on the statement by Education Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid who wanted state education departments to cooperate with the police to conduct urine tests on teachers at risk of being involved in drug abuse.

Mahdzir’s statement came following the arrest of a 33-year-old teacher in Miri, Sarawak, for alleged drug trafficking. – Bernama
