MIRI: The Telang Usan District will celebrate its first annivesary with watersport events and Telang Usan Raft Safari 2016 to be held at Long Lama river front on October 1.
State Assemblyman for Telang Usan Dennis Ngau said the Telang Usan District is the first new district to celebrate its first anniversary and he thanked Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for upgrading the area into a district.
“The anniversary celebration is to mark the district’s progress and also to thank Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for his contribution to rural development. The advisers for the celebration are Member of Parliament for Baram Anyi Ngau and Senator Datuk Lihan Jok,” said Dennis while chairing the second Telang Usan 1st annivesary celebration meeting at the subdistrict office in Long Lama yesterday.
Also present were Political Secretary to Chief Minister, Charles Balan Seling, Telang Usan district officer Ezra Uda, Councillor Dominic Nyurang, Penghulu Desmond Yap Cheng Siang, Kapitan Yeo Kei Siang and organising committee members.
Dennis said the celebration would allow the Telang Usan community to mingle with the outsiders coming in to participate in the watersport and rafting events.
He said the committee wanted to highlight the cooperation among government and private agencies to further boost development and bring more tourists to Telang Usan.
Dennis, who is the joint chairman for the celebration said the Telang Usan Raft safari 2016 is the main event apart from the various boat races .
He said the raft race was held for participants to experience rafting in Baram, foster community relationship and promote Baram especially Telang Usan as one of the preferred eco-adventure sport destinations for sport tourism in Sarawak.
He said the route is from Uma Bawang Kanan to Long Lama, Baram with a distance that takes a maximum duration of seven hours.
“Apart from the rafting competiting, powerboats, longboats and pumpboats races will also be held including a one-day karaoke open competition which offers attractive prizes,” he disclosed.
Dennis also said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who is also Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, would officiate the opening of the celebration on October 1 at 2.00pm.
“The karaoke open competition will have two categories of Men’s Team and Women’s Team. Each team can only have a maximum of six people. For both categories, the cash prizes for first, second and third place winners are RM2,000, RM1,500 and RM1,000 respectively. They will also receive tropies and medals while the fourth to 15th place winners will receive RM300 each. All participants will be given a Certificate of Participation and the entrance fee is at RM60 per team. The closing date is on September 29.

He added that the powerboat races are divided into longboats, tunnel boats and pumpboats categories and they offer over RM53,000 in prizes.
