Talk to discuss workers’ rights and welfare

MIRI: The Sibuti and Miri District Care Association will hold the talk ‘Labour’s Right and Welfare’ on Labour Day (May 1) at Dynasty Hotel Miri from 2.30pm to 5.30pm.

Spokesman Chiew Choon Man said the talk will discuss the rights and welfare of Sarawakian workers, the role of the relevant stakeholders, and other general issues concerning workers.

“The forum is held in conjunction with Labour Day and members of the public are welcome to attend it,” said Chiew.

He said this year Sarawakians were shocked by the news that a group of young workers from Sarawak had been detained by Cambodian authorities as they were deceived by syndicates into illegal activities.

Not long after that, he said another group of Sarawakians was reported to have been detained in Libya.

“One of the questions that people often ask is that, how on earth would Sarawakians, being the sons of the Land of Hornbill that is blessed with various natural resources and opportunities, after nearly 56 years of the formation of Malaysia, have to try their luck to earn a living in lands which are deemed to be much less fortunate than Sarawak,” he said.

Chiew, who is chairman of the legal bureau of Parti Keadilan Rakyat Youth wing, will be a panellist along with Malaysian Trades Union Congress Sarawak secretary Andrew Lo, and Labour Department Miri head Dorrhea Chuat.
