Surau gets donation to extend prayer hall

MIRI: The Surau Abu Bakar Asaddiq in Desa Senadin will be able to accommodate larger congregation for Terawih prayers this Ramadan, thanks to a donation from the Majulah Miri Group to extend the prayer hall.

Surau imam and committee member Abu Hurairah Mohamad said the extension is a long-awaited dream for the hundreds of Muslims in Desa Senadin.

This Ramadan month, Muslims in Desa Senadin and its surrounding housing areas can perform the Terawih prayers at the surau, he told the media after receiving Majulah Miri leader Datuk Hii King Chiong and United Peoples Party

(UPP) Senadin members at the surau.

On media reports that certain quarters had misinterpreted the donation from Majulah Miri, Abu Hurairah said: We hope people would not politicise the good deed done by Hii, who is sincere in helping Muslims to have a bigger prayer hall. The Majulah Miri Group is helping with the request of Muslims to fund the extension of the surau.

He said construction of the extension, which would be able to accommodate over 150 faithful, would begin soon.

This is a house of God. Please dont politicise the needs but come forward to give opinions, advise or donations for the interests of Muslims, he said.

News of the surau extension has been received well by Muslims in the area.

We are happy to see there are also non-Muslim organisations coming forward to help the surau. What we want is for the surau to be made use of by Muslims residing in Desa Senadin Phase I, II, II, IV, V, VI, Green Ville, Prominjaya, Desa Ras and Curtin University students, said resident Mohd Soffian.

Fellow resident Dimin Supardi pointed out that Desa Senadin is the only area in the city without a proper surau.

Come and see for yourselves the condition of the surau before giving your political comments, making donors shy away from donating, he said in response to criticisms of Majulah Miris donation.

At present, the surau can only accommodate around 40 worshippers at one time.

Meanwhile, Hii said Muslims in Desa Senadin had approached Majulah Miri for the donation.

He said the group not only contributes to temples and churches, but also suraus and mosques as there is no political agenda.

Hii added the committee would help apply for land to build a new surau in Desa Senadin.

I will bring up the application to the state government to look for a piece of land to build a surau, which is long overdue, he said.

On whether he is campaigning to stand in Senadin, Hii replied: Im not standing in Senadin,

but merely helping Muslims to have a bigger prayer hall in the surau.
