MIRI: SUPP is distributing atotal of RM24,000 in cash and goods including clothes, mineral water, dry and canned food to
the recent flood victims in central and upper Baram through its Disaster Relief Fund (DRP).
According to SUPP Central publicity officer Adam Yii, who is also the DRP task force coordinator, funds donated by its members and the public would also be given to the victims to help rebuild their homes.
In fact, two containers, one arrived in Miri last Friday (Jan 9) and another will leave for Miri from Kuching tomorrow (today), will reach the victims directly. More items which were donated by members of the public directly to SUPP Piasau branch will then be gradually channelled to the victims soon, he told The Borneo Post when contacted yesterday.
The longhouses in central and upper Baram that were affected by flash floods early this month are Kampung Mulu, Batu Bungan, Long Iman, Long Panai, Rumah Asong, Linai Bukit and Long Bemang.
Yii added that an additional RM12,000 would be given to flood victims in the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia through a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to purchase food items as well as other necessities.
Since it would be costly to channel the items to the victims, therefore, we have come up with the idea of channelling the money directly, and from there they could purchase items for the victims, he said.
Meanwhile, the partys Piasau branch secretary Karambir Singh thanked all the volunteers who had helped to sort out and pack the items before they were transported to Baram.
Even though the floods in Baram have partially subsided, the relief work will still go on. SUPP has been active in appealing for and collecting relief items from donors, he said.
Individuals wishing to donate can bank in their donations to SUPP Disaster Relief Fund account number 110270010066662 at Alliance Bank Miri branch.
