KUCHING: The state will work to strengthen shelter services to better protect victims of violence.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Community Wellbeing Datuk Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry would work with the Women and Family Department as well as Sarawak Women for Women Society (SWWS) on the issue.

“We want to ensure appropriate protection is given to violence victims, especially the women and children,” she told a press conference after receiving a courtesy call from SWWS on Thursday.

“There will be further discussion on the matter so that we can provide proper assistance to the victims.”

Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Sri Aman currently have one shelter each.

Fatimah added they would also focus on improving the law to further protect such victims.

“This is to ensure the welfare of the women, especially in divorce cases,” she said.
