The leader of Somalia’s main armed group al-Shabab has threatened to attack the United States if Barack Obama, the US president, does not convert to Islam.

“We tell the American President Barack Obama to embrace Islam before we get to his country,” Fuad Mohamed Shongole Qalaf, one of the rebel leaders, said in a radio broadcast on Monday.

The message was recorded in the town of Afgoye, near the Somali capital of Mogadishu during a merger ceremony between Al-Shabab and another armed Islamist group Hizbul Islam. The two armed groups have declared a merger to help oust “infidels” from the country.

Aweys, the leader Hizbul Islam, said his group will fight under al-Shabab’s command to destroy “infidel” from Somalia.

"We have united for the sake of our ideology and we are going to redouble our efforts to remove everything haraam from the country.

“We have been waiting [for] this unity for so long and thanks to Allah for finally helping us succeed to be a unified mujahideen force,” added Aweys.

The al-Shabab group launched coordinated suicide attacks in Uganda in this July that killed 76 people. It has also announced its allegiance to al-Qaeda and is believed to be harboring a mastermind of the twin 2008 bombings of U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania that killed 224 people.

Somalia, the Horn of Africa nation has not had a functioning government since a socialist dictatorship collapsed in 1991. Its position on the Horn of Africa means pirates can use its long coastline to capture shipping.

Al-Shabab has not yet launched an attack outside Africa but Western intelligence has long been worried because the group targeted young Somali-Americans for recruitment. About 20 Somali-Americans have traveled to Somalia for training.

Ridiculous. Forcing someone to convert to a religion is insane.

And I think America can’t/won’t do anything. They’re too busy with all their internal politics (rich people getting tax cuts!), plus Iraq/Afghan wars, plus tensions with Iran and South Korea.

i seriously don’t get the rationale for such demands, my only guess is, with most of his life spent on being a warlord, his mentality is also that of a feudalist warlord.

i assume he believes once obama, as the head of state, converted, the US would also have its religion changed. that is true in somalia, also the wider middle east and arab world. may sound ridiculous but some people’s mentality is like that.

someone gotta tell him it just doesn’t work. even if obama converts, shall he try to impose the religion, tomorrow america would have its president changed.

this one uses the hard ways (i.e. force, violence)

others use the soft ways (i.e. keep pestering you at your house or whenever you go once they targeted you)

Recently I watch about treacherous conditions in Somalia on Al-Jazeera. It’s really a dangerous place. Only dare-devils like that journalist dare to land on Mogadishu. His mission to search for pirates is really interesting. Hope it’s still on air on channel 513.
