MIRI: A full-dress rehearsal for the Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s birthday parade at Miri Stadium yesterday went smoothly despite light rain.
Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman) Datuk Talib Zulpilip said he was satisfied with the rehearsal although some elements needed fine-tuning.
Talib (second left) is seen with (from left) Deputy State Secretary Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, and Miri Resident Mastapha Julaihi.
“Thank you to everyone involved today (yesterday) and I can see their enthusiasm and I know all have been working and practising hard even on their own. This shows they really want to make this work and I believe the minor mistakes and so on will be perfected on the actual day of the parade,” he told reporters.
Dancers perform a number during the parade.
“We pray the weather to be good this Saturday just as it is today (yesterday) and there is a possibility that the parade might be changed to the Indoor Stadium if there is heavy rain this Saturday, but it is not confirmed yet. Anyhow, we are prepared and always on a standby.”
The celebration will begin with thanksgiving prayers today (Oct 11) at Masjid Darul Ehsan in Piasau Jaya, which more than 1,500 are expected to attend.
The Miri Melanau Association contingent marches past the grand stand.
A crowd of some 15,000 is expected to attend the parade tomorrow (Oct 12), starting at 8am, involving 5,000 participants from over 100 contingents from Sarawak government agencies, associations, non-governmental organisations, uniformed units, and institutes of higher learning.
Among the highlights of the parade will be a special fly-past comprising the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Fire and Rescue Department, Hornbill Skyways, and police.
There will also be a ‘human graphic’ performance by 800 participants as well as presentations by the Sarawak Arts Council.
An investiture ceremony will be held after the parade, followed by a grand state banquet, which will feature special performances by Orkestra Tradisional Malaysia from Istana Budaya, Kuala Lumpur and top singers.
There will also be a people’s concert that same evening at Coco Cabana featuring Faizal Tahir, Ricky Andrewson, Melissa Francis, Bibiyanti, Siti Hajar, Raquel, Firdaus Materang, and Norafizah Busman.
On Sunday (Oct 13), the Gymkhana Club Miri will host a high tea reception during which the Head of State will present welfare aid to the underprivileged, followed by the launching and tour of the ‘Dirgahayu Exhibition’ at Pustaka Miri.
