Cadets from SM Sains Miri celebrate being overall champion of the games.
MIRI: Self-discipline is strengthened by being actively involved in uniformed bodies, says Senator Alan Ling.
“The purpose of a uniformed unit is to produce cooperative and disciplined youths,” he said when officiating at the closing ceremony for Miri Division Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) two-day Student Cadets Camp 2020 organised by Zone 6 here yesterday.
He stated that students get to be leaders in such uniformed bodies, instilling confidence, responsibility, dedication, loyalty besides social skills which would serve them well in their future undertakings. Being involved in uniformed bodies also helps keep youths away from undesirable activities like drug abuse and gangsterism.
Over 200 students and teachers from nine secondary schools here – Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, SM Sains Miri, SMK Agama Miri, SMK Bekenu, SMK Baru, SMK Merbau, SMK Lutong, SMK Taman Tunku, and SMK Tinjar Baram participated in the camp.
Competitions held during the camp included foot drills, knot tying challenge, ‘Aspec Challenge’, quizzes amongst others.
Winning cadets were selected to represent the division at state-level competitions.
SM Sains Miri beat eight other schools to become the overall champion followed by Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang and SMK Bekenu respectively.
Ling lauded healthy competition to encourage team work among student cadets and hoped the camp would continue for many years to come.
Also present were Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Zone 6 chief Law Poh Kiong and representatives from the state Education Department.
