Saudi: If unmarried men go to mall, they will harass women

In Saudi Arabia, single men are not allowed to go shopping mall during peak hours (evening) and weekends. Why is that so? Apparently, the Saudi Arabian religious authorities believe that if these men are to go shopping together at the same time when a lot of women are present, immoral acts will happen. These single, unmarried Saudi men may seduce, harass, or worse, have sexual activities with those women inside the mall.

Saudi bachelor men are only allowed into the shopping centers at lunch time on weekdays, a move the religious authorities said is intended to curb women from being violated in the mall. Saudi Arabia imposes a strict gender segregation policy which frowns upon any social mingling between non-mahram (non-related) males and females in public.

But the ruling backfired. A tripartite committee comprised of the undersecretary at Riyadh Emirate for Security Affairs, the Haia Branch Director in Riyadh and the Riyadh Police Director General, found that large groups of Saudi men have now instead gather outside the malls to harass women. “The ban (single men entering mall at peak hours) has many negative consequences, we found many problems including the gathering of men outside the shopping malls to harass women”, the committee reported.

It is not immediately known why men in Saudi Arabia acted in such a way that it elevates the issue into national concerns. In most parts of the rest of the world, such similar concerns is minimal.

Following the report and recommendation made by the special committee, Prince Sattam bin Abdul Aziz, the emir of the Riyadh region, considered the more liberal area in Saudi Arabia, issued a directive to lift the ban and ease restrictions on single Saudi men in shopping mall, provided “they don’t misbehave with women shoppers and obey the security regulations.”

On Wednesday, social networking sites in Saudi Arabia have been flooded with news about the lifting of the ban. The new directive is enacted in Riyadh but it was not immediately clear whether the same rule will come to apply to other areas in the country. Saudi youths reacted with joy to the news, however…

RIYADH, SAUDI ARABIA - Single men in Saudi Arabia claim they are still being barred from entering malls despite a recent directive from Riyadh Governor Prince Sattam to ease the restrictions on them in the mall, according to reports from the local al-Watan newspaper.

Religious police and security officials questioning a suspected single man in mall.

Mohammed, 21, said security guards still bar him from going in. It is an issue of trust and the managements of some malls still feel it is their right to prevent us from visiting the malls, he said.

On the other hand, Abdullah, a 36-year-old executive, believes the new directive represents a step toward breaking social taboos and spreading tolerance. I have been in a situation before where I have been barred although I tried to explain to the security guard that I have errands to run in the mall and no other intentions. Still he insisted on the ban.

Families were divided on the governors directive. Some said it could lead to trouble in malls and girls might be harassed. Other families said it would not be a problem because there are security guards and officers from the religious police to deal with any possible trouble.

Monira, a mother of three young girls, did not see anything wrong with the decision. My girls know how to respond if they are harassed. Besides, young men are everywhere, in the streets, the clinics and hospitals. Why should we assume that all of them are not well-behaved and will cause problems?

Hurry girls, do your shopping before lunchtime, else the men will come in to harass you!

A manager at one of the large malls in Riyadh, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed he and his colleagues have never been given clear directives regarding the policy concerning the entry of single men.

Our management wanted to keep the mall a safe place for families and ensure it was harassment free, said the source, admitting he personally found it unrealistic and unfair to prevent singles from entering malls. He also claimed single men always tried to sneak in because of this policy.

Sara, a young woman, admitted she had helped young single men enter malls by pretending she was related to them. The truth is, although there have been reports that girls are paid to do this, I wasnt. I just did it because I felt sorry for them. They stand there like beggars and all they want is to shop or go to food courts, she added.

Saudi Arabia, an ultra-conservative kingdom, bans cinemas and theaters after claiming they are ‘un-Islamic’, thus making shopping malls a popular hangout venue for young Saudi men and women.

Later someone will come to defend this type of people… Someone will be accused of inciting hatred towards Muslim.

Why dont they divide their country into 2 parts , eg Northern part for men & Southern part for female only so that they can create the culture of gay & lesbian there and their population will diminish from the earth.

Instead this creates a population of sexually repressed people, who in turns did things like rape etc.
