Sarawak urges Petronas to expand piped gas facility to more areas

MIRI: Sarawak wants Petronas to expand the piped gas facility to people living in the suburbs, and not confined to domestic consumers in the city.

Minister of Industrial Development Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said the government had already written to the national oil corporation to consider this proposal.

We will follow up on this, he said when officiating at a RM5 million rural electrification scheme project in Kampung Bakam yesterday.

Awang Tengah was responding to the request by Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat.

Present were Assistant Minister in the Chief Ministers Office Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Assistant Minister of Water Supply Datuk Sylvester Entri Anak Muran, Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis and Citra Alti Sdn Bhd chief operating officer Samat Othman.

On the request for street lightings for longhouses and villages, Awang Tengah said this would be implemented in stages based on budget allocation.

On another matter, he said more 1Malaysia tanks would be distributed to various parts of the state this year as the federal government had given some money for it.

Meanwhile, Ripin said the predominantly fishermen and farming community here welcomed the RES project as it benefitted 132 families.

On another matter, Ripin urged the state government to look into some 1,000 lots in Bakam, Kejapil and related areas that were awaiting the issuance of land titles in the 1990s.

He also spoke of the need to widen the narrow coastal road between Bakam and Sepupok as the narrow road shoulder had led to several fatal accidents.

The coastal road has heavy traffic and fast-moving vehicles, and as such, the road should be widened.

On politics, Awang Tengah urged Lambir folk to stand firmly behind Ripin, for he had proven his mettle in fighting for their interests.

It is only right to be grateful and to help him bid for more development in your area.
