Sarawak Update FB administrator arrested

MIRI: Sarawak police have arrested an administrator of the Sarawak Update Facebook site to facilitate probe into derogatory and racially-offensive remarks allegedly posted against a Sarawak minister.

The 45-year-old man surrendered at the police headquarters in Kuching at 10.30am on Sunday.

Sarawak CID Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar (pic) said the man was placed under arrest after he surrendered.

His handphone has been seized for the probe, SAC Dev said when contacted.

Two days ago, the Sarawak Update allegedly posted remarks against a state minister that contained racial slurs.

This is the sixth arrest of Facebook users in relation to police probe on offensive online postings after the death of Tan Sri Adenan Satem.

On Saturday, a 17-year-old schoolgirl in Mukah town in central Sarawak was arrested after the police found that there were sinister remarks in her Facebook postings against the late Chief Minister.

The cases are being investigated under Section 500 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act, said SAC Dev.

At least 40 police reports had been lodged in 12 police districts throughout Sarawak over seven Facebook postings that were deemed offensive and defamatory against Adenan, he added.

Six individuals have been arrested – four in Kuching, Sibu, Miri and Mukah in Sarawak, and another in Kuantan, Pahang.
