SIBU: An e-commerce innovation centre will be set up in Sibu, Miri and Kuching track companies and entrepreneurs’ readiness for international trade and e-commerce.
International Trade and E-Commerce Minister Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh said the centre aimed to assist budding entrepreneurs taking their first step into e-commerce by providing them with necessary assistance.
“This centre aims to provide a start-to-finish solutions and support to e-commerce entrepreneurs.
“IT infrastructure will be provided focussing on promotion, training, education and development of entrepreneurs who are venturing into e-commerce,” he said at the first installation ceremony of Sarawak E-commerce Association here.
“The setting up of the centre, is important as entrepreneurs need to familiarise themselves with e-commerce jargons and the right tools for their operations.
“Without guidance, 80% of them will either give up or fail because of the inability to do transactions in the limited market,” he said explaining the rationale for setting up the centre.
Wong, who is also Second Finance Minister, said it was timely to venture into e-commerce because of the vast opportunities in this segment. Local e-commerce ventures will bring maximum benefits to Sarawak and its people.
“There is unlimited opportunity in e-commerce.
“Take our Dayak’s sape for example.
“I am sure many of us like to give sape as a sourvenir.
“The market can be so big that we may have to set up factories to make this instrument.
“And there are many other local products that can be marketed globally,” he said.
He commended Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg for his far-sighted move in the state’s economic transformation by unveiling the digital economy plan.
“We call upon all government departments and agencies, business players and entrepreneurs, particularly the young technocrats, to support the bold move and aspiration of our Chief Minister,” added Wong.
