Sarawak To Beef Up Security On Eve Of Merdeka
KUCHING, Aug 21 (Bernama) – Sarawak will beef up security on the eve of Merdeka Day (Independence Day) to prevent possible disturbances, said State Secretary Datuk Amar Abdul Aziz Husain.
Abdul Aziz, who is also a State Security Council member, said this was because the celebrations on the eve of Merdeka in the past had been misinterpreted by the younger generation, with some engaging in illegal activities like illegal racing, consuming alcohol in public and flying non-Jalur Gemilang flags.
The police were prepared to prevent any possible disturbances during the national level Merdeka celebrations on the eve of Aug 31 in Tebingan Kuching, he told reporters after officiating a Jalur Gemilang (national flag) waving ceremony in Petra Jaya here today.
“I hope everyone will celebrate the 49th Merdeka Day with discipline and avoid causing disturbances,” he added.
Kuching has been given the honours to host this year’s Merdeka celebrations carrying the theme of “National Mission Generates Vision”. Malaysia gained its independence from the British on Aug 31, 1957.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak are among the 15,000 people, including local and foreign dignitaries, expected to participate in this year’s Merdeka parade.
