Sarawak police achieve record raids

MIRI: The Sarawak police have busted 32 illegal four-digit joints in 11 districts over the past 24 hours.

State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Dev Kumar said the raids on Wednesday was a record for the Sarawak CID.

“Coffeeshops and sundry shops were used as fronts for these gambling activities.

“We seized equipment including computers and handphones besides cash.

“Forty male and female suspects aged 17 to 41 were arrested,” he told StarMetro.

SAC Dev said 13 CID teams carried out raids simutaneously in urban centres such as Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu.

The operations also covered smaller towns such as Serian, Sri Aman, Julau and border town Limbang, he said.

“We are achieving good results in our war against vices but much more needs to be done.

“New Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Amer Awal had called for even more extensive raids against vices,” said SAC Dev.

All district police divisions were told to be vigilant against offenders because some had resorted to using eateries as fronts for illicit gambling, he added.
