MIRI: Sarawak Pakatan Harapan will fight the newly-formed Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), made up of former Barisan Nasional member parties, in the next state elections.

The Sarawak PH parties of DAP, PKR and Amanah will fight the four parties of Parti Pesaka Bumiputra Bersatu, Sarawak United Peoples Party, Parti Rakyat Sarawak and Progressive Democratic Party, which announced today (June 12) they have pulled out of Barisan to form the independent coalition called GPS.

Sarawak DAP deputy chairman Chiew Ching Sing said although the newly formed GPS had declared itself “Pakatan-friendly”, Sarawak PH will still challenge GPS.

"The next state election will still see Sarawak PH taking on GPS, which is led by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.

"The GPS members may have left Barisan Nasional. They may have declared themselves as Pakatan friendly.

"But they are still on the other side of the political divide.

“Since they are not part of Sarawak PH, we in Sarawak PH will still have to fight them in the next state polls in less than three years from now,” Chiew told The Star when interviewed.

Chiew is state assemblyman for Tanjung Batu.He said that GPS must not be the new clothes for Sarawak BN.

There is no point for Sarawak BN parties to become GPS without changing their way of governing the state.

"We will see how GPS functions from now on.

“Will it still be like the old Sarawak BN with a new name?” he asked.

Abang Johari said today that GPS was not joining Pakatan Harapan but would “cooperate and collaborate” with the Federal Government for the national interest and state rights based on the Federal Constitution.

“We are not joining the Pakatan coalition. We will have our own bloc and we will remain in the Opposition in Parliament,” he said.

“Our new coalition will enable us to focus on Sarawak interests and rights based on the Malaysia Agreement,” he said.
