Sarawak CM says press plays important role
BY SHARON LING
KUCHING: The press plays an important role in educating the public about development, Sarawak Chief Minister Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud said.
He said the press could do this by reporting on various aspects of development and its impact on the people.
“This is informal education for the people on the process of development and how they can participate in it and benefit from government projects,” he told journalists at the Kenyalang Shell Press Awards 2006 here on Monday night.
He also said that in his 25 years as Chief Minister, he had enjoyed a “straightforward” relationship with the press.
“I trust the press in Sarawak. They are serious in treating development as an important topic in their reporting,” he added.
He later presented prizes to the winners of the 17th edition of the awards.
A total of 220 entries from print and broadcast media were received in six categories.
The Journalism Award was won by Mohd Firdaus Abdullah of New Straits Times (English section), Abdul Aziz Drahman of Utusan Sarawak (Bahasa Melayu) and Tan Shen Chee and Chu Mei Yii of United Daily News (Chinese section).
Awards were also given in news reporting, sports reporting, environmental journalism, news photograph and broadcast journalism.
Meanwhile the Most Promising Young Journalist Award went to Ting Nguk Ding of See Hua Daily.
