Samarahan And Kuching Record Highest API
KUCHING, Aug 9 (Bernama) – Samarahan and Kuching recorded the highest Air Pollutant Index (API) in the country at 11am Wednesday with the API reading of 79 and 76 respectively.
The Department of Environment (DOE), in its official web page today reported six areas in Sarawak with a moderate level of API, namely Bintulu (69), Sri Aman (68), Petra Jaya (67), Kapit (56), Sarikei (54) and Sibu (52) while Limbang recorded a healthy level of 37. There was no API reading for Miri.
An API reading of 0-50 shows a healthy level, while the moderate level is between 51 and 100, unhealthy (101-200), very unhealthy (201-300) and dangerous (301 upwards).
Sarawak DOE director Ismail Ithnin, when contacted by Bernama, said 24 hot spot areas were detected in Sarawak, especially in the Kapit division, Bintulu and Sri Aman yesterday while 208 hot spot areas were detected in Kalimantan in the neighbouring country.
“The burning of forests and the wind blowing from the Kalimantan direction have also contributed to the haze in Sarawak currently, although the API is still at the moderate level,” he said.
