MIRI: The racial harmony practised by some 28 ethnic groups here makes the resort city truly special and the best model for unity in the country.

Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said such uniqueness should not be taken for granted and urged the people to further promote peace and goodwill.

“Miri is a home for some 28 ethnic groups with different cultural backgrounds. Thus we should, at all cost, safeguard the existing racial unity and harmony from being jeopardised by negative elements,” he said when officiating at Miri Special Affairs Department (Jasa) pre-Christmas event organised in collaboration with Saberkas Pujut Branch at Saberkas Commercial Centre yesterday.

Meanwhile, Miri Jasa officer Lukanisman Awang Sauni urged the people in Miri to support Ting, who is also SUPP Piasau Branch chairman, in his efforts to look after their welfare.

Lukanisman said Ting has organised various social and welfare programmes here for the needy.

On the pre-Christmas event, he said it was the last event under Jasa’s ‘Helping the People’ (Membara) programme here this year, with more community-based outreach programmes planned for next year.

Miri Mayor Adam Yii, Jasa Miri information officer Dayan Norazelina Hamdan and Jasa Miri connectivity chairman Ishak Ahmad were also present.
