MIRI: Sabahan Yico Wong Yee Khe bagged the Borneo Voice Star Singing Competition title after beating 14 other contestants in the grand finale which was held last Sunday at Meritz Hotel here.

Apart from winning the champion’s trophy, the 11-year old took home cash prize of RM1,200, a shopping voucher sponsored by Poney and hampers sponsored by Nestle Koko Krunch and Julie’s Hersheys.

In second and third places respectively were Jackvin Chai Chang Wei from Kuching and Jasmine Lau Yee Xuan from Miri, both 10 years old.

They walked away with RM800 and RM500 cash prizes as well as a trophy and hampers respectively.

Jointly organised by Bintang Megamall Miri, Meritz Hotel and Serene Music Academy, the competition also gave away 11 consolation prizes in the form of a certificate and hampers each.

The consolation prize winners were Albee Kong Zhi Chee (Miri), Karen Ting Xin Er (Sibu), Vaness Goh Zi Ying (Labuan), Ling Quan Qi (Sibu), Rachel Lim Xue Er (Sabah), Elvan Ng Jun Chien (Sabah), Eleazar Wong Yu Yun (Bintulu), Ashley Tan Ke Yun (Sabah), Sarah Hii Xiu Qi (Miri), Agnes Ting (Sibu) and Chai Kee Li (Miri).

Meanwhile, consolation prize winner Sarah Hii Xiu Qi won the Best Costume award with her extravagant attire and entertaining stage performance.

She took home a cash prize of RM200, a trophy and hampers sponsored by Nestle Koko Krunch and Julie’s Hersheys.

All contestants were aged five to 12 years.

Organising chairman Allen Wong, who is also the event manager of Bintang Megamall, was delighted with the great response to the competition which saw 61 contestants from Sarawak, Sabah and Brunei at the preliminary round.

“During the preliminary round which was held on Saturday, 14 successfully qualified to enter the semi and grand finale and we could see that all contestants had been giving their best regardless of stage performances and their attire. Whether they won or not, we are proud to see all that of them gave their 100 per cent effort,” he said.

Apart from promoting and discovering new singing and performing talents, Wong said the competition was also held to collect donations for PDK Morsjaya, as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

Chief executive officer and founder of Serene Music Academy, Serene Cheam; professional singers Penguin Chan and Xiao Wei Wei from Kuala Lumpur as well as local renowned singer and singing instructor Alex Lau acted as panel judges of the Borneo Voice Star Singing Competition.
