Saba’ans In Sarawak Are Malaysian Citizens - Nazri

KUCHING, Aug 16 (Bernama) – People of the Saba’an subtribe, mostly found in the northern part of Sarawak, are legitimate bumiputeras and Malaysian citizens, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz stated here Sunday.

He made the statement after being briefed by State Planning and Resource Management Minister II Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan and Sarawak Attorney-General Datuk Abdul Razak Mahamed Tready, adding that the Saba’ans should be able to enjoy all the rights as citizens of this country.

“When I met them (Awang Tengah and Abdul Razak) yesterday, I was told that the Sa’baans were a subtribe of the Kelabit ethnic group in Sarawak, and the state constitution does not require any amendment (to ascertain this fact),” he told reporters after visiting the Kuching Court Complex.

He said the issue of citizenship of this minority group should not be blown up and that he had already informed the relevant agencies of their status.

Nazri said recently, a misunderstanding occurred when a Saba’an mother was charged a medical fee of RM3,000 by a hospital in Miri when the woman failed to give her personal details, and hence she was thought to be a foreigner.
