KUCHING: Sarawak emerged as regional overall champions of Wushu Union Cup after amassing a total of 40 gold, 22 silver and four bronze medals at the Wushu Union Cup Championship 2016 in Seremban, Negri Sembilan on September 16 to 17.
The tournament was jointly organised by Negri Sembilan Wushu Association and Chinwoo Association and supported by Ministry of Youth & Sports.
The 26 wushu athletes from Sarawak Dragon-Lion Dance & Wushu Association (PTNSWS) and accompanied by officials Tiong Ching Chiong, Calvin Kong, Gilbert Wong and Wong Siaw Ling did Sarawak proud at the open age group competition that attracted more than 600 participants from throughout Malaysia & Brunei.
In addition to the regional overall champion trophy, PTNSWS also obtained two subsidiary awards – Best Association and also Best Coach awards through Calvin Kong.
PTNSWS president Matthew Lee was delight with the performances of the athletes who hailed from Kuching, Sibu and Miri and were mostly below 17 years old who competed in junior level events.
He added that it was an eye opener and gruelling contest for the young Sarawak athletes who had to compete with some 40 contestants in each event.
Lee commended the organisers for holding an open competition that is conducive for further promotion and more competitive championships that serve to groom athletes for tougher international challenges.
