BARIO: A sum of RM350,000 will be allocated by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-based Industry for the development of Bario mountain salt processed by the villagers in the highlands to ensure wider commercialisation of the product.

Its minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the government was in favour of their application for financial assistance.

“After looking into their demands, it is a reasonable matter and there is no reason for the government to not approve it.

“Bario mountain salt is a premium salt that is not only used in cooking, but also offers many other useful properties not known to the public,” he said when met by reporters after a visit to the Bario mountain salt processing facility at Main Keramut, Kampung P’Umor here recently.

Ahmad Shabery also mentioned that it is necessary to upgrade the processing facility in order to increase production which will lead to higher income and provide more employment opportunities to the local community.

“Usually such salt can only be found near the sea, but the salt here is special because the source comes from underground at the hills, and it also contains more iodine than normal table salt.

“The local community here needs to be assisted to encourage them to become more creative in the effort to commercialise this premium product because it has huge potential in helping us improve the country’s productivity as a result of the development,” he added.

He also said commercialising the salt on a bigger scale would enable it to be marketed to Peninsular Malaysia instead of just being sold in Bario, Miri and the surrounding areas.

He suggested that the community look into vegetable and dairy farming, which he said are suitable for the area.

“Bario with its natural cold climate and spacious areas of land is very suitable for producing high quality milk and dairy products,” he said.

Accompanying Ahmad Shabery during the visit was Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang.
