MIRI: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau welcomes the proposal made by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Baram on appointing its own shadow councillors and community chiefs in the constituency.
When contacted for comments yesterday, he said the proposal was not a surprise to him but warned that the initiative should be done with a genuine purpose.
“Yes, we welcome the proposal too but they have to have a genuine purpose and work as hard as those councillors and community chiefs appointed by the government,” Dennis said.
He stressed that should PKR have its own shadow councillors and community chiefs, then they too must perform well.
“They should not just know to criticise the ones appointed by the government but also work hand-in-hand with them, especially on issues affecting the community because I believe the appointments of any community chiefs or councillors are to bring good to the people,” he said.
He added that the councillors and community chiefs appointed by the government had been doing their job without any salary.
“They are doing their job voluntarily. Do not expect them to work like ‘Yang Berhormat’ (people’s elected representatives) who have MRP (Minor Rural Project) grants because sometimes, they have no means to do what they want for the people,” he pointed out.
At its annual general meeting on Saturday, PKR Baram chairman Roland Engan proposed the idea of appointing the party’s own shadow councillors and community chiefs to serve as a watchdog over the ones appointed by the government.
On another note, Dennis pointed out that he would continue to work hard in bringing more development to Baram as promised by the Barisan Nasional (BN) government in the last state election.
He cited the construction of Long Lama Bridge as an example, which he said was ongoing and scheduled for completion in 2019.
“I, however, believe that the project would be completed sooner than 2019,” he said.
He revealed that a total of 12 solar hybrid projects had been approved for the Telang Usan constituency, which would be carried out in stages this year.
