MIRI: Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon has accused the Land and Survey Department of not doing its part to resolve a land dispute at the foot of Canada Hill.

According to Dr Ting, the dispute involves land where a Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) substation is located, which villagers claim to be Native Customary Rights (NCR) land.

“The state government through its agency, the Land and Survey Department, must solve the dispute as every time there is electrical failure or a blackout, the people of Miri will suffer,” he told a press conference yesterday.

According to Dr Ting, the power supply disruption on Tuesday night saw many areas here including Permyjaya, Piasau, Krokop, Pujut, Riam, Tanjung Lobang, and Friendship Garden without electricity for over three hours.

He claimed SEB’s contractor and workers could not access the substation as villagers refused permission to enter the area, requiring negotiations, which slowed down the restoration work.

“It is a stumbling block for both parties as the Land and Survey Department is not solving the issue promptly,” claimed Dr Ting.
