MIRI: People from 20 villages in Marudi district are protesting a proposed oil palm plantation project that they say will infringe on their native customary rights (NCR) lands.

These villagers have held a joint meeting and have highlighted their plight to Sahabat Alam Malaysia (Friends of the Earth, Malaysia or SAM) over NCR lands of 28,400 hectares in total.

SAM president SM Mohd Idris today issued a media statement urging the state government not to proceed with the project yet.

"Do not issue any permit to clear the land until the grouses of the natives have been addressed.

"The natives are saying that they have been pressured since late last year.

“They say they had been told that their land will be taken over for the project,” he said.

SAM officers in Marudi are getting details on the size of the proposed project and are gathering data from the natives as to their native land boundaries.
