Pregnant wife, hubby perish in road tragedy

MIRI: A meter reader and his three-month pregnant wife were killed in a horrific accident at Bakam coastal road yesterday afternoon. Mahadi Rashid, 32, a Kedayan, and his Indonesian wife, Ani Muari, 31, of Kampung Dagang in Bekenu died on the spot in the accident that occurred near Sungai Buluh bridge here at around 1 pm. The couples motorcycle was believed brushed by a 4WD vehicle bearing a Brunei registration plate that came from the opposite direction. The impact caused the couple to be flung several metres from their motorcycle which slammed onto a roadside signage. Married three months ago, the couple was believed to be on the way home after the wife had a medical check-up. The victims were believed to have sustained fatal head and bodily injuries. Meanwhile the driver of the Prado lodge a report on the fatal accident at Miri Traffic Police Station at Jalan Brighton. It was learnt that the driver, a 36-year-old local working in Brunei, was heading towards town. The cause of the accident between the two vehicles travelling in opposing lanes was not immediately clear. Investigating officer Chief Inspector Mohd Fauzi Sabri was at the scene to find out the cause. The bodies of the accident victims were later sent to Miri Hospital for a postmortem to ascertain the cause of death. Mohd Fauzi confirmed that a report on the incident had been lodged, but declined to divulge details on how it occurred. According to sources, Mahadis wife was about three months pregnant. They had tied the knot in November last year. Their immediate families and friends were devastated to learn of the tragedy as they were looking forward to the birth of the couples first child.
