Police conducting internal inquiry on contractor’s claim

MIRI: The police are conducting an internal inquiry on the claim by an oil palm contractor Harry Ma that his attempts to make a police report on the intrusion of several Penans into the plantation were not accepted.

This was disclosed by Miri police chief ACP Khoo Leng Huat in a press statement issued last night in response to yesterday’s The Borneo Post report on Ma’s claim.

“We are investigating Ma’s allegations that Batu Niah police station refused to accept his report,” said Khoo.

He added that police had been trying to get in touch with Ma to record his statement.

“Ma is currently in Serian.Police in Serian has been asked to interview and record his statement on his claims,” explained Khoo.

Khoo confirmed that on Dec 20 at 2.40pm, there was a police report lodged by Miri Jamak, 48, (Harry Ma’s stepfather)in Batu Niah after several of his items were stolen.

The stolen items were a handphone, his wallet containing his MyKad, other personal documents, RM700 and tools valued at RM4,000.

“However, the complainant (in his report) did not mention the intrusion at the Tg Tiara oil palm plantation.

On Dec 20, when police interviewed Miri, he said he did not witness the alleged intrusion,” said Khoo.

However, Miri said Arfan Malek, 41, a supervisor of the plantation witnessed the intrusion on Dec 19 at 10am.

“Yesterday at 3.35pm, Arfan lodged a police report at Batu Niah Police Station,” said Khoo.

In his report, Arfan claimed that on Dec 19 at 10am, when he was at the oil palm plantation (Suai, Niah) he encountered five four-wheel-drive vehicles and one of the drivers told him they were Penans from Suai, Niah.

“Not long after that, eight other 4WD vehicles came and they hurled firecrackers at Arfan before fleeing the scene with several of the workers’ belongings,” Khoo said.

Several motorcycles and lorry were damaged at the scene.

Khoo said the case is being investigated under Section 506, 448 and 427 of the Penal Code.

As at press time, no arrest has been made.
