Police arrest man for kidnapping ‘girlfriend’

MIRI: A 43-year-old man was arrested by mobile police vehicle (MPV) personnel for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend cum niece on Thursday evening.

According to police source, the man was arrested at Lutong traffic intersection around 3pm after receiving call from members of the public who saw the 26-year-old victim waving desperately from a 4WD vehicle driven by the suspect.

On receiving the call, our men dashed to the said location where they spotted the vehicle and managed to corner it on the spot, said Miri deputy police chief, Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit.

Sources added the suspect had pulled over somewhere in Piasau when he saw the victim that day.

It was believed that the suspect and the victim had an affair for the past six months, and when the victim decided to call off (the relationship), the suspect became angry. Furious with the decision, the man drove from Belaga to Miri to meet the victim. It was said, that he pulled the victim into the vehicle and was heading towards Kuala Baram. During inspection of the vehicle, police discovered a shotgun and a machete.

The victim was sent to Miri hospital for treatment for injuries sustained during her struggle inside the vehicle. The suspect has been detained under police custody at Miri central police station (CPS) to facilitate investigation on the case.
