Personalised number plates

SEGAMAT: Malaysians will soon get to have personalised registration number plates for their vehicles, by paying an extra fee.

However, there are still some finer details which we need to look into before Malaysians can apply to have their own personalised registration number plates, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said here.

We are also looking into the formats for the plate, whether to allow names, numbers or both, he said after opening the Segamat Road Transport Department branch office here yesterday.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has submitted the proposal to the ministry for evaluation.

Chan said JPJ, which provided services to about 30 million people a year, was among the busiest government departments in the country, and it had to continually improve its delivery system.

He said the department had succeeded in implementing several electronic or E-systems such as the E-Registration, E-insurance and E-ownership for all vehicles.

Chan added that by the end of the year or early next year, several more E-systems would be introduced including E-enforcement, E-health, E-plate and E-kiosk.

He said these were aimed at making the department more efficient in providing services to the public, adding that, last year alone, more than one million vehicles were registered.

The department had also opened up 11 new branch offices throughout the country since 2003, and, more would be built under the Ninth Malaysia Plan, said Chan.

To a question on Singapore weekend visitors who drove into the country, Chan said that as long as the vehicles had valid road taxes, it was within the law.

He said the law required all foreign vehicles to have valid road taxes to travel in the country.

After it’s been implemented, there will still be police / JPJ / whatever stopping you and saying that your license plate is illegal.

This reminds me the days when JPJ implemented the compulsory ‘Q’ on license plates in Sarawak with a window period of about 2 years (:? for everyone to get it done. That must have been really hectic, but for this case it is not the same. But anyway, just curious, how did you foresee such things would happen? From my observation, they (not just JPJ, the military too) don’t even bother to stop cars using super unique plate numbers like ‘1’ or even ‘2’, with heavily tinted windshields for fearing of pissing-off some Datuks or royal bloodlines.

Well, backwhen they introduced the MYKad and said that it can be used fully as the IC, there are police still stopping people and NOT accepting the MYKad and instead asking for a ‘real’ IC. You know, double standards. I’m sure as a Malaysian you’d know immediately that double standards exist everywhere in whatever government departments (and some companies).

So, I foresee that this ‘personalised’ license plates would cause some problems to. And let’s not get into the ‘kopi-o’ variety.

Heck, even now it’s causing problems. I have a friend who tinted ‘JPJ approved’ glass for his car and end up fined by the traffic police. It’s really, really stupid.

That’s the thing with certain ppl in this country (emphasis on certain). They think that just because they are some bigshot, they therefore are above the law and can do anything as they wish.

Imagine yourself as being a nobody stationed at a guardhouse. Somebody come in a heavily tinted car. You stop the car and ask the driver for identification card. And he go hurl insults at you … “Don’t you know who I am! I am so and so!!” You can be firm and insist on his identification. Next thing you know, you are prolly out of a job, or you get a tongue-lashing from your superior.

Sounds too far-fetched? That’s the reality. Follow procedure, you’re wrong. Don’t follow, also wrong.

You know what? You might be right. Some non-english literate JPJ staff might approve plates like ‘EATSMOKE’, ‘RACEME’, ‘GOOGLE’ or something to that extent. Heck, the prices for such names might even surpass the auction price for single digit plate numbers.

So that’s why most pretend they got temporary blindness. And the gate ‘magically opens by itself’.

I had fun with these people. Usually when I goto whatever place that has a stop gate (hotel, school, government buildings, Curtin) I just roll up my car to them, give them a slight nod, and pretend I know what I am doing. Then they just smile and nod back at me and let me pass. After that I’d just laugh histerically in my car.

I prefer something like ‘BACKOFF’, ‘USUCK’, ‘G8OFFDROAD’ etc.

On another note, I wonder why they would stick to numbers and letters all this time (like what they teach in Kindergarten). Why not just instead of ‘QMA 8888’ use ‘SWK MIRI 8888’. Therefore, no more guesswork where the car came from.

Then u will hv ‘D Longest Personalised Number Plate’ recorded in Msia Guiness Book of Record…hehehehe

good discusion guys… should be interesting to see where this ‘personalised plate number’ going…

still remember the GST (sales tax) issue… after so much debate, forum, convention, conference, and you name anything the event manager can make money out of it… suddenly the implementation was posponed to some later date (read:indefinite)…
