Overwhelming response to last leg of Go Bald event

BINTULU: The final stop of the Go Bald campaign at Bintulu Times Square Megamall yesterday received overwhelming response from the public including cancer survivors and family members.

Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) president Jocelyn Hee thanked all participants for the strong support to Go Bald, which is the signature fundraiser for the SCCS to spread awareness of childhood cancer.

She said every shaven head represents an understanding by an individual of the ordeals that a child with cancer is subjected to.

“Go Bald started 10 years ago with the objective of raising awareness and pledging emotional support for the families battling cancer in Sarawak.

“At the same time, it is an event for us to raise funds to be able to support our activities and our service,” said Hee.

She added that ever since they started Go Bald 10 years ago, proceeds from the event contributed an average of 60 per cent to the society’s annual expenses of RM1.5 million.

“We have served more than 1,100 families to date, built two halfway homes, one in Kuching in 2013 and Miri in 2016, which have served more than 200 families, and have a full-time staff team of nine people to serve the increasing number of families each year, with the aim of providing quality and consistency, care and support,” Hee said.

Apart from raising funds, Hee said the event sends a very strong message of courage and support to those battling cancer and that they are not alone in the journey.

“The journey is not an easy one, emotionally, physically, mentally and financially, but together with all the support, SSCS will continue to do our best to provide the best care and support to these families,” Hee added.

Moving forward, she said SCCS hopes to support and work closely with other childhood cancer support groups in Malaysia to share resources and the best practice to help more families battling childhood cancer in the country.
