Our own Universal Studio under 9MP
KANGAR: Malaysia may have the likes of Universal Studio if a RM100mil request to build a national filming complex is granted.
Deputy Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister Datuk Wong Kam Hoong said his ministry was awaiting approval from the Government to construct the complex on a 40.5ha land under the Ninth Malaysia Plan.
Wong said the ministry was still in the midst of identifying a suitable land, most probably in Selangor to build the complex.
Currently, there are small studios located within the National Film Development Board (Finas), and once this complex is completed, it will house a wide range of backdrops for filming.
There will be big and huge sceneries like rivers, forest, streets and villages for the local and foreign film makers to shoot their films there, he said after closing the Film Exhibition and Film Screenings at Dewan Kapitol here yesterday.
The event was jointly organised by Seniman and Malaysia Northern Engineering University College.
Wong said the complex could help in the expansion of the film industry.
He said the Government could set up such facilities, but he hoped filmmakers and the production crew would also play their role in ensuring the complex was used and promoted.
Wong said the Government had approved a RM120mil grant to upgrade the facilities at Finas.
