Ong heads body for better living

MIRI: Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting has been elected president of the Eastern Regional Organisation for Planning and Housing (EAROPH) a global body involved in efforts to raise the quality of life in human settlements in the Asia and Pacific regions.

Ong was elected head of the organisation for the 2006-2008 term during EAROPHs 20th World Planning and Housing Congress and Mayors Caucus being held in this oil capital and resort city of Sarawak.

The group meets regularly to discuss issues pertaining to improving the quality of life for people in member countries.

This organisation is very unique and important as it provides a common platform for government leaders, politicians, mayors, academicians, housing and land developers and representatives of the communities throughout the region to help improve the quality of urban and rural developments.

Malaysia will use this opportunity to share its experience in the implementation of urban and rural development projects.

We have several examples of how we have been managing our cities and urban areas well. For example, Kuching and Miri, they are doing very well in terms of urban management.

Kuching ranks very high in Malaysia in terms of city management. Miri is a very good example of a healthy city.

We (Malaysia) will use this opportunity to forge closer ties and exchange knowledge and technology among developed and developing countries in this grouping so that we can come up with real smart partnerships to make life better in this increasingly global village we live in, said Ong at a press conference yesterday. … sec=nation
