Oil palm plantation in Ulu Niah hit by flood - Metro News | The Star Online

MIRI: Plantations in remote area here are not spared from flooding.

Miri Fire and Rescue Department personnel evacuated 15 foreign workers from an oil palm plantation in Ulu Niah in northern Sarawak after the plantation was inundated by flood yesterday.

Incessant rain for days here resulted in floodwaters rising to more than half the height of the palm trees.

Miri Fire and Rescue chief Supt Law Poh Kiong said the 15 evacuees included 11 male workers, two female workers and two children.

“They were working inside the plantation area located 7km away from the main road.

“Our unit used a rescue boat to reach there and brought them to higher grounds.

“They will be taken to the plantation company’s main office,” he said in the Miri flood report.

The plantation measuring more than 10,000ha is located some 100km south of Miri city.
