Weapons smuggling ring uncovered
KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17: The search for assault rifles, pistols and ammunition that went missing from armouries at military bases has led police to a weapons smuggling ring.
A man was detained in China and flown here tonight.
The arms smuggler, a Malaysian, fled to China after the theft-cum-smuggling activity came to light earlier this year.
His arrest, with the co-operation of Chinese police, comes in the wake of the arrest of several suspects here, including serving military personnel.
Led by deputy Criminal Investigations Department director Datuk Mokhtar Hassan, the task force is expected to recommend that those nabbed in connection with police investigations be charged under the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act.
The suspects are scheduled to be produced in court in Kedah and Perak, next week.
