KOTA KINABALU, Wed: THE VIGILANCE of the Malaysian security forces have thwarted apparent attempts by foreign bandits to strike at east coast of Sabah last year.

Fifth Brigade Commander Brig Gen Md Ruslan Md Ali Hanafiah said the military last year received intelligence reports of bandits trying to enter Sabah and possibly commit criminal acts.

“The operative we have, however, appeared to have prevented them from penetrating into the coastal areas,” he said referring to Ops Pasir, a combined exercise between the armed forces and police set up in 2000.

Ops Pasir was introduced following high profile kidnapping cases at the resort islands of Pulau Sipadan and Pulau Pandanan in the east coast district of Semporna in 2000.
