Northern Region UPP branches declare support for Wong

MIRI: Five United People Party (UPP) branches in Northern region have declared their total, unequivocal and undivided support for their party president Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh to lead UPP in the forthcoming state election.

The five party branches are Piasau, Pujut, Senadin, Bekenu and Limbang.

The pledge of loyalty to Wong was made on behalf of the five branches by chairman of the UPP Senadin branch Councilor Keith Chin at a press conference at UPP Miri office yesterday.

Chin said the branches were responding to report published in a Chinese daily on Friday on the demand by Sarawak United People Party (SUPP) for Wong’s retirement as a pre-condition for negotiation between the two parties.

“It was reported in a Chinese daily that SUPP proposed that UPP president Dato Sri Wong retire from politics and, in return, SUPP president Senator Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian offered not to stand in the forthcoming state election.

“If the news report is true, UPP categorically reject the proposal that Dato Sri Wong retire from politics as a pre-condition to negotiations. Such a pre-condition smacks of bad faith and shows a personal vendetta to get rid of Dato Sri Wong. It will not lead to any possible compromise.

“All UPP leaders hereby declare that we will sink or swim with Dato Sri Wong. Whilst UPP is ever ready and willing to negotiate with SUPP for the good of the Chinese community, Dato Sri Wong will lead UPP in any such negotiations and any suggestion by SUPP that he retire is rejected outright by UPP.”

Also present were the chairman of UPP Pujut branch Councilor Bruce Chai and chairman of UPP Bekenu branch Penghulu Haw Min Wai.
