MIRI: The federal government is willing to increase allocations to upgrade the Saberkas night market next year, said Urban Wellbeing, Housing and Local Government Minister, Tan Sri Noh Omar.

He said the RM200,000 allocation previously promised by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi during the Sarawak state election early this year had been handed over to the state government.

“I was informed that it has been received, but it was not enough after the Miri City Council reviewed the design of the market,” he said after visiting the Saberkas night market here, yesterday.

Noh said, the city council needed an additional allocation of RM600,000 to upgrade the market, especially the roof, which would be replaced from canvas to stainless steel.

“The allocation for upgrading is RM800,000. RM200,000 has been given and now the additional allocation requested is RM600,000. We will discuss with the state government on the amount to be given soon,” he said.

He said the exact amount could only be known next year, after the 2017 Budget is tabled in Parliament, next week.

Saberkas night market, one of the most popular locations for tourists in the city is open from Wednesday to Saturday and every afternoon during Ramadan.

In another development Noh, who also visited the Lambir People’s Housing Project (PPR), said applicants who managed to secure a unit would receive offer letters soon as it is ready to be occupied by year’s end.

Located on a 18.35-ha site, the PPR has 500 units of affordable home for those with incomes of below RM3,000 a month. – Bernama
