MIRI: The people of Bekenu waited for the good news and Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak came a-calling with just that – RM55mil from the Federal Government for tourism and health infrastructure development.
The Prime Minister was on his third working visit to the town of Bekenu 50km southwest of here, where he announced a RM50mil allocation to build a new health clinic in the Bekenu state constituency.
“RM5mil is to build an esplanade in (Kampung) Seberang Bekenu,” he said when addressing the people at a tea reception in the town yesterday.
Najib, who is also Barisan Nasional chairman, urged the people of Bekenu to support the Barisan candidate in the general election.
Earlier, Najib, accompanied by Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg, went on a walkabout in Bekenu after flying in from Bakun.
Sarawak Assistant Minister of Women, Family and Early Childhood Development and Bekenu state assemblyman Rosey Yunus said about 60,000 people in the Niah and Sibuti areas would also benefit from the new clinic.
“We hope construction of the clinic can be expedited as the Prime Minister has given the approval,” she said, adding the proposed location was in Niah.
She said the small clinic in Bekenu could not handle the rising number of patients.
She also said the new esplanade in Kampung Seberang Bekenu would boost tourism, serve as a flood mitigation infrastructure and promote water sports activities for youths. — Bernama
