Miri leg draws 100 golfers

THE oil-rich city of Miri in Sarawak was the venue for the eighth qualifying leg of the 2006 Cross Creek Pharmaton Amateur Golf Circuit, presented by Emirates on Aug 6.

More than 100 golfers took part in the tournament held at the beachside Miri Golf Club, hoping to gain one of six spots in the Grand Final to be played this Sept 10 at Saujana Golf & Country Club. The top three gross and top three nett finishers of each of nine qualifying legs earn berths in the season finale.

The gross title was won by five-handicapper Abang Izzul Islam, who shot six-over 78 on the tight, challenging layout. He took home a Srixon S506 driver for his efforts. Andrew Colin (7) won an Emirates air ticket to Jakarta and an Emirates golf travel cover for finishing second on gross 80, edging third-placed Fong Chan Kwee (6) on countback. Fong won a Srixon XXIO putter.

Dicksion Barauk (10) won the nett title with a score of 70 nett, edging Bunyak Lunyong (11) on countback. Dicksion took home a Srixon 403AD fairway wood while Bunyak won a Hitachi tower fan and a Cross Creek ballistic bag. Third place on nett 72 went to Chia Hon Thin (11), earning him a Srixon XXIO wedge and a Cross Creek duffle bag.

The Nearest To Pin novelty contest at Hole 9 saw Alaister Maiyor hitting a tee shot that stopped eight feet and nine inches from the flag to win an Ogawa Perfect 8 Body Shaping System. Robert Chua drove his ball to within six inches of the line at Hole 17 to claim the Nearest To Line prize of an Ogawa Trinity Eye Massager. Meanwhile, Patricia Lipang upstaged the men to win the Longest Drive contest at Hole 8 to take home an Ogawa Perfect 8 Body Shaping System.

The Sure-To-Win Hole-In-One Prize at Hole 12, a Hitachi jar cooker, was claimed by Chew Pak Chung with a 1.5-metre effort. There was also a Sure-To-Win Hole-In-One Prize at Hole 16, an Emirates air ticket to Jakarta, which was won by Anthony Yong with a tee shot effort that stopped 24 feet and two inches from the pin.
