Miri Internet users third in Malaysia spending most time on porn sites

MIRI: Internet users here are in the limelight for the wrong reasons by being among the most active porn site visitors in the country, sharing the top two spots with Kota Baru with an average of 12 minutes 27 seconds.

Statistics reported last week by online adult video company Pornhub revealed that Internet users in Kuala Terengganu topped the list, spending an average of 12 minutes and 58 seconds looking at or searching for visual pornography.

Internet users in Kuala Lumpur were the second highest (12:29 minutes), followed by KotaBaru and Miri (both at 12:27 minutes).

Though porn website RedTube has been blocked by regulator Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), some users may still be able to access it as Internet service providers (ISP) need time to reconfigure their networks.

Some ISPs have appealed for more time to explain the delay in blocking RedTube from being accessed in Malaysia.

The commission monitoring and enforcement division senior director Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin was reported by Malaysian Insider as saying that the said ISPs were issued a directive to block the website last week.

It is not that they are not complying, but they have to configure their network to block it and for some providers, this takes time because of technical issues.

Some providers also have different technical capabilities and this also takes time, he was quoted as saying.

The website had been blocked since December 19 and those who clicked on it were redirected to a page with the warning: This website is not available in Malaysia as it violates national law.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek said MCMC had shut down or blocked about 1,400 websites, including those dabbling in file-sharing sites.

He said 1,225 complaints were received on inappropriate online content, representing only 0.006 per cent of the 19.2 million Internet users in the country.
