MIRI - Miri-based Sarawak conglomerate Shin Yang Group was awarded the ISO 14001 accreditation from SIRIM, and also the Requirements of Chain of Custody (RCOC) Certification for its wood-based factories - namely Shin Yang Plywood Miri, Forescom Plywood, Shin Yang Plywood Bintulu and Zedtee Plywood - from the Malaysian Timber Certification Council (MTCC).
The group executive director James Ling said the ISO endorsement was in recognition of progress made by the company in preserving the environment while the RCOC is a guarantee for buyers that the timber products they purchased are made from MTCC-certified sources of wood-based materials.
The RCOC certification also means that the logs from which the products are manufactured are sourced from sustained forests.
The Sarawak minister of plantation enterprises and commodities, Datuk Peter Chin, said many countries accept MTCC-certified timber products, including Denmark, the UK, New Zealand, France, the Netherlands, Japan as well as the city of Hamburg in Germany.
In Sarawak, ISO certification is instigated by the Sarawak Forestry Department with the support from the Sarawak Timber Association, working in conjunction with MTCC in accordance with the guidelines of the International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) and its criteria for the measurement for sustainable tropical forest management (CMSTFM).
