MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) is keen to work with Pustaka Miri to make Sarawakiana Carnival a signature event during Miri May Fest 2016.
Mayor Lawrence Lai said the three-day culture-based carnival, with informative and entertainment segments thrown into the mix, was a crowd puller.
MCC is keen to work with Pustaka Miri to make this event grander next year, he said when closing the carnival here recently.
Lai added the programme managed to showcase the uniqueness of various cultures.
We seldom have the opportunity to foster better understanding of the cultures of other communities. This carnival indirectly helps to bridge that gap. Children at the carnival are given positive exposure, thus this carnival can serve as a starting point for the young generation to appreciate and safeguard existing racial harmony from being destroyed by negative elements.
Present was Pustaka Miri regional manager Salina Zawawi. The carnival was organised by Pustaka Miri in conjunction with Pustaka Negeri Sarawaks 15th anniversary, Miri Citys 10th anniversary celebration, and Mrii May Fest 2015. This was the second time it was held here. The first one was in 2011.
Among the activities held during the carnival were Miri City Development Forum, Local Culture Heritage Exhibition, Sarawak Traditional Dishes Cooking Demonstration, talk and workshop on Sape, Sarawak Traditional Musical Instruments Exhibition, and Children Cultural Performances.
