Microsoft to end sales of Windows XP to large PC makers Monday

REDMOND, Washington (AP) - Microsoft Corp. is scheduled to stop selling its Windows XP operating system to retailers and major computer makers Monday, despite protests from a slice of PC users who don’t want to be forced into using XP’s successor, Vista.

Once computers loaded with XP have been cleared from the inventory of PC makers such as Dell Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co., consumers who can’t live without the old operating system on their new machine will have to buy Vista Ultimate or Vista Business and then legally "downgrade’’ to XP.

Microsoft will still allow smaller mom-and-pop PC builder shops to buy XP for resale through the end of January. A version of XP will also remain available for ultra-low-cost PCs such as the Asus Eee PC.

A group of vocal computer users who rallied around a "Save XP’’ petition posted on the industry news site InfoWorld had been clamoring for Microsoft to keep selling XP until its next operating system, Windows 7, is available. The software maker has said it expects to release Windows 7 sometime in 2009.

Last week, Microsoft said it would provide full technical support for six-year-old Windows XP through 2009, and limited support through 2014.-AP

The Star

Don’t ever switch to Vista. It really sucks.

i am now using window vista ultimate…i think it really good leh…makes your computer looks classy…all in high definitions…the security system…it wouldnt allowed you send of received something that has potential harm inside…you wanna get infected also cant!cant even open the virus file…its really good…i would recommend you guys go for vista,xp is outdated already…

Yeah right and i’m also using using Vista Ultimate, 64 bit somemore. The volume is always muted everytime i start my pc. Have to manually turn it on. Explorer always have error and terminate by itself. Takes ages for its network function to be ready. I basically have to wait for 2 minutes after log in to connect to streamyx. Sometime desktop and sidebar also takes ages to load.

I don’t think Vista sucks as some people made it out to be. I say its good OS but I think the issue here is there are still a lot of software that have yet to migrate to Vista platform.

I think its the usual hostile feeling towards a new OS just like how people felt when they upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP.

Windows XP shares its own sets of problems early on its release and it got better with Service Pack 1, 2, and finally 3.

Vista just got Service Pack 1 and it did helped to improve performance and compatibility.

Its good only for casuals surfers.

For hardcore users and gamers… sigh. :frowning:

It gets in the way of productivity.

add more juice (RAM)…

my laptop was like shite wit 512mb RAM running vista but now wot 1.5GB RAM, so far ok ok.
except the notification pop-up (to remove/open/delete applications/files is really annoying…

I’m holding out for Windows 7. If it still the same then as Vista, I’ll just give up and either 1) Switch to Mac/Linux or 2) Stop using computer? Sigh… lol

relaxjack the problem is not related to vista is probably related to ur pc alone. i’m vista user myself and i dont experience any problems that you are having. asked a few and they dun have any problems like urs as well.

I was using xp before that and everything was fine. I know a few ppl using vista and the funny thing is that all of them have different set of problem after switching from xp to vista. Maybe our pcs are allergic to vista.

I run triSLI pc with 4 Raid 0 10k rpm hardisk and 8gig of ram. Vista Ultimate x64 just screws me upside downside leftside rightside diagonal side. Trust me you’re not hardcore enough if you think Vista is good enough for games or true hardcore application use Bmyself.

I can’t even run a full set of my benchmarking test properly with it. Only reason to go with Vista is it security and firewall features which are doubtless many times better then the WinXP. I dont mix my work pc with my gaming/enthusiasts pc, so it doesn’t matter however much my gaming pc gets a virus or not. Nor do I get any virus since its always down to your surfing and using habit to dictate whether you can virus at the end of the day or not. If you surf porns sites and warez sites, you’re bound to get those things. I just dont go downloading anything I see from the website without trully trusting it but sadly not everyone has this kind of discipline surfing habits.

To each his own, Vista for me, is just plain rubbish and a GUI upgrade only. Nothing else for me since its security features is not relevant for me.

I’m now back to x64 WinXP Pro.

I don’t think I have ever seen a pirated game for mac/linux so that is probably why it is not a problem.

if your pc doesnt have the required requirements sure will have problems with the OS. i guess now we all know whats the problem

The current trend is that you have to upgrade your hardware in proportion to the software upgrades.

There is never a rule set in stone that says this should always be the case.

next pc i’m going mac or linux…

If C2D E8400/4GB DDR2/ATI 8750 GC is not sufficient for Vista, You must be using a supercomputer.

Motherboard is also important. I don’t seem to face any problem with Vista with my Gigabyte P35-DS3 but that motherboard was built with Vista certification.
