SIBU: The Marine Department in Sarawak will be holding the Mate Domestic (Restricted) Course at three different venues.
The venues are at the Marine Department Sibu branch (24 – 26 February from 9.00am to 5.00pm), Marine Department Miri branch (2 – 4 March from 9.00am to 5.00pm) and Marine Department Bintulu branch (9 – 11 March from 9.00am to 5.00pm).
Speaking at a press conference held at Sibu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) premises here yesterday, chairman of Sarawak and Sabah Shipowners Association, Yong Ing Hui said the course was open to seafarers with working experience but without certification.
In the past, he said, these courses would cost about RM3,600 each and would take place over a period of three months. There would also be written and oral examinations.
“Today, the Marine Department will hold a three-day course, with simple tests, at a cost of RM800.”
“A certificate (Mate Domestic less than 500 GRT (Gross Registered Tonnage) – Restricted) will be awarded at the end of the course. This certificate allows the seafarers to serve as captains on board vessels of not more than 500 tonnes in domestic (Sarawak) waters or port,” he said.
Yong said the course would be conducted in Malay and English language.
He also advised those who had registered for the course to bring along two passport size photos, their Seaman Card, Seafarers Discharge Book, Medical certificate and other relevant certificates.
